Sony and Alamo Drafthouse Plan Revival of Hollywood’s Cinerama Dome
Sony and Alamo Drafthouse Plan Revival of Hollywood’s Cinerama Dome
Hollywood’s Sunset Boulevard is preparing for the return of a landmark cinema destination. JLL and CBRE have brokered a significant long-term lease that will see the historic Cinerama Dome and the adjacent former ArcLight Cinemas complex restored and reopened.
The agreement involves Sony Pictures Entertainment and its subsidiary, Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. Sony acquired Alamo Drafthouse in 2024 and will utilize the operator to manage the venue. The iconic theater, which has been closed since the onset of the pandemic in 2020, is currently scheduled to welcome audiences back in early 2028.
Renovation efforts are set to commence next month. The project aims to preserve the Dome’s defining architectural features, specifically its 86-foot-wide curved screen. While the landmark Dome will not offer the dine-in service typical of the Alamo brand, the neighboring 14-screen multiplex will reopen as a full-service Alamo Drafthouse. The multiplex is slated to feature dine-in options, 4K laser projection, and 70-millimeter film capabilities.
The transaction represents a major commitment by Sony to the physical moviegoing experience in the heart of Los Angeles. The Cinerama Dome, opened in 1963, is designated as a Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument and has long been a premier location for large-format film presentations. Its closure had served as a stark reminder of the challenges facing the exhibition sector during the global health crisis.
Real estate services for the deal were extensive. JLL’s Ken Shishido represented Alamo Drafthouse in the lease negotiations. On the ownership side, the Dome Entertainment Center was represented by CBRE’s Nicole Mihalka, Carl Muhlstein of Muhlstein Commercial, and JLL’s Scott Burns and Shauna Mattis.
