Canopy MLS Appoints Technology Veteran Byrd as CEO Amid Governance Shift
Canopy MLS has named Steve Byrd as its next chief executive officer, effective August 1. Byrd transitions from his role as vice president and chief technology officer, a position he has held since joining the organization in 1997. The leadership change is part of a broader restructuring of the organization’s governance and operations.
Byrd will succeed Anne Marie DeCatsye, who is set to retire at the end of 2026 after more than 25 years of leading both Canopy MLS and the Canopy Realtor Association. DeCatsye will remain with the organization through the remainder of 2026, during which time Byrd will report to her.
A major component of this transition is a strategic pivot away from a shared CEO model. The boards of both the MLS and the association have decided to install separate chief executives for each entity. This shift is designed to clarify accountability and position both organizations for future growth. A national search is currently underway to find a dedicated CEO for the Canopy Realtor Association.
Headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, Canopy MLS is one of the largest multiple listing services in the United States, supporting over 22,000 subscribers. In his new capacity, Byrd will oversee strategic leadership, financial management, and innovation. He aims to expand products and services to establish Canopy as a national player in MLS innovation.
Byrd’s long tenure at the organization involved managing the technology infrastructure powering both the MLS and the association, including hardware, software, and networks. He is expected to maintain close collaboration with executives in the Southeast MLS Alliance. This alliance includes partners such as Zillow Group, Inc. affiliate Realtracs, Georgia MLS, Charleston Trident Regional MLS, and realMLS.
While Zillow Group, Inc. traded lower recently, Byrd’s industry involvement extends beyond his home organization. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Council of MLS and the Real Estate Standards Organization, as well as the National Association of Realtors MLS Standards Workgroup. He has also participated in advisory panels for CoreLogic, Realtor.com, and ShowingTime.
