ARA Advocacy Strategy Faces Scrutiny Two Years After Launch

As the Compass stock price navigates current market conditions—trading recently at $12.52 and down 4.32%—agents within major brokerages are evaluating industry organizations with a critical eye. Nearly two and a half years after the American Real Estate Association (ARA) was unveiled with significant fanfare, questions persist regarding the fulfillment of its initial strategic promises.

Launched in January 2024 by Mauricio Umansky and Jason Haber, the ARA positioned itself as an alternative to the National Association of Realtors (NAR). The founders cited four primary pillars for the new organization: addressing industry scandals, responding to commission lawsuits, improving advocacy efforts, and establishing better communication lines. However, a review of the ARA’s progress against its 2024 pledges reveals a shift in execution for the nonprofit.

The association’s initial financial projections have not materialized. While early discussions suggested an annual membership model priced between $400 and $500, the organization ultimately launched at a significantly lower rate of $20 per year, alongside a $1,500 founding tier. Furthermore, plans to secure $50 million to $100 million in outside investment capital did not come to fruition. Haber noted earlier this year that fundraising for a nonprofit proved to be a different challenge than anticipated, as there is no equity offer for investors.

On the technology front, the promised National Listing Service remains listed on the company’s website but has not yet launched, and no specific timeline has been provided to the public.

Advocacy remains the central focus of the ARA’s value proposition, yet its early efforts have been collaborative rather than independent. The organization recently opposed a state income tax bill in Missouri, but that campaign was led by the Missouri Association of Realtors and its 25,000 members. The ARA joined the coalition three weeks prior to the vote, contributing support but lacking its own dedicated lobbyists at the time. The organization has since named its first chief lobbyist to bolster its legislative presence.

The group is also building out its operational structure, having named an inaugural executive director in late 2025. As the ARA matures, agents from firms like Compass and RE/MAX are watching to see if the pivot to a lower-cost membership model and a nascent lobbying team can deliver the industry influence originally promised.

What to watch

  • Updates on the launch timeline for the proposed National Listing Service.
  • Details on the ARA’s legislative agenda following the hiring of its first chief lobbyist.
  • Future membership growth figures under the $20 annual dues structure.
