Zillow and Redfin Settle FTC Dispute Ahead of Scheduled Trial

Zillow Group, Inc. and rival brokerage Redfin have reached a resolution with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) just before their case was set to go to trial. The agreement addresses regulatory concerns regarding the companies’ business practices and ensures that current data syndication agreements will remain intact.

Under the terms of the resolution, both real estate giants have committed to offering standalone advertising products specifically designed for the multifamily housing sector. Additionally, Zillow has indicated that it intends to launch these specific multifamily ad offerings by the year 2027.

Markets reacted to the news, with shares of Zillow trading up. The stock was priced at $36.04 during the session, representing a gain of 1.47% compared to the previous close of $35.52. The company currently holds a market capitalization of approximately $7.58 billion. Operating within the Communication Services sector and the Internet Content & Information industry, Zillow connects consumers with technology, agents, and digital solutions across its Residential, Mortgages, and Rentals segments.

By resolving the dispute outside of the courtroom, both companies avoid the uncertainty and potential costs associated with a protracted legal battle. The decision to maintain syndication likely provides stability for listing partners who rely on the broad distribution of property data across major portals.

What to watch

  • Execution of the standalone multifamily ad products leading up to the 2027 target.
  • Future financial disclosures regarding the costs associated with the FTC agreement.
  • Upcoming quarterly earnings reports for commentary on the multifamily advertising strategy.
