Zillow and Redfin Agree to $2 Million Settlement with Arizona Regulators

Zillow Group, Inc. and rival brokerage Redfin have reached a resolution with the Arizona Attorney General, agreeing to pay a combined $2 million and terminate a joint business arrangement that state officials deemed illegal. The settlement concludes an investigation into a partnership that allegedly limited consumer choice in the state’s real estate market.

Arizona authorities had challenged the agreement between the two real estate giants, asserting that their collaboration violated state laws regarding competition. As part of the resolution, the companies will not only pay the financial penalty but are also required to dissolve the specific deal that drew the regulator’s scrutiny. The terms aim to restore a more competitive landscape for homebuyers and sellers in Arizona.

The financial penalty will be split between the firms, marking a regulatory setback for both companies as they navigate an evolving housing market. While the press release detailed the legal accord, it did not specify which company would shoulder what portion of the $2 million total.

Zillow, currently trading under the ticker Z, saw its stock price move 4.31% higher to reach $37.05 during the session. The company, which operates a massive digital real estate marketplace connecting consumers with agents and loan officers, holds a market capitalization of approximately $8.33 billion. Zillow operates through segments including Residential, Mortgages, and Rentals.

What to watch

  • Official dissolution timeline of the specific business agreement cited by Arizona regulators.
  • Future regulatory filings regarding the $2 million payment allocation.
