Former Zillow Employee Alleges Discrimination in Wrongful Termination Suit

Former Zillow Employee Alleges Discrimination in Wrongful Termination Suit

Zillow Group is facing a lawsuit from a former employee who claims he was terminated under discriminatory circumstances, according to a complaint filed against the Seattle-based real estate technology company.

The suit centers on the timing of the termination. According to the complaint, the plaintiff was fired on September 9, 2025 — the same day he returned to work from leave taken under the Family and Medical Leave Act. The filing also notes that the employee had received a warning about his job performance in June, roughly three months before his dismissal.

The plaintiff alleges the termination constitutes discrimination, arguing that being dismissed immediately upon returning from protected medical leave raises concerns under employment law. FMLA provisions shield eligible workers from adverse action tied to their use of protected leave.

Zillow, which trades on Nasdaq under the ticker Zillow Group (Z), operates the Zillow app and website connecting consumers with agents, loan officers, and digital real estate solutions across its Residential, Mortgages, Rentals, and Other business segments. The company’s shares were priced at $35.00 in recent trading, up 1.45% from the previous close of $34.50, giving the company a market capitalization of roughly $7.86 billion.

Employment-related litigation is not uncommon among large U.S. employers, and companies of Zillow’s scale — with thousands of employees across the country — routinely face such claims. The outcome of these cases often hinges on documentation of performance issues, the timing of personnel decisions relative to protected leave, and the employer’s stated rationale for termination.

The June warning referenced in the suit may become a focal point in the litigation, as employers frequently cite pre-existing performance concerns when defending against claims tied to leave-related terminations. Courts typically weigh whether such warnings reflect genuine performance management or serve as pretext for discriminatory action.

Neither the size of any damages sought nor the specific court where the case was filed was detailed in initial reporting on the complaint.
