Court Denies Zillow’s Bid for Injunction Against MLS Provider MRED

A federal judge has turned down Zillow Group’s request for a preliminary injunction in its ongoing legal dispute with Midwest Real Estate Data (MRED), the multiple listing service covering the Chicago area, according to a report from Chicago Agent Magazine.

The ruling means MRED is not required to change its practices while the underlying litigation proceeds. Preliminary injunctions are an extraordinary remedy that courts grant only when a moving party demonstrates likelihood of success on the merits and potential irreparable harm; the denial suggests the court did not find that threshold met at this early stage, though it does not resolve the merits of Zillow’s claims.

MRED is one of the largest MLS organizations in the country, serving tens of thousands of real estate professionals across northern Illinois and surrounding markets. Access to listing feeds is central to the business models of listing portals, making disputes between portals and MLS providers closely watched across the industry.

Shares of Zillow Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: Z) were trading at $31.96 in Friday’s session, down 1.69% from the previous close of $32.51, giving the Seattle-based company a market capitalization of roughly $7.27 billion. The company operates across four segments — Residential, Mortgages, Rentals, and Other — connecting consumers with agents, loan officers, and digital real estate tools.

The legal fight comes amid a broader period of flux in residential real estate, as listing-syndication rules, MLS data policies, and commission practices have all drawn heightened scrutiny following recent industry settlements and regulatory attention. How courts adjudicate data-access disputes could shape the competitive landscape for portals and brokerages in major markets.

What to watch

  • Further rulings and filings in the litigation between Zillow and MRED, including any scheduling orders for the merits phase of the case.
  • Zillow’s upcoming quarterly earnings report, which may address the legal costs and strategic implications of the dispute.
  • Whether other MLS organizations or portals become involved in similar data-access litigation.
