Compass gets serious about AI, adds Google Gemini leader to board

October 14, 2026 · by Real Estate Presswire Pipeline

Compass International Holdings has appointed longtime Google executive Sissie Hsiao to its board of directors as the company leans further into artificial intelligence and advertising-driven growth.

The New York-based brokerage conglomerate announced the move on Wednesday, saying Hsiao will join the board of directors of Compass Inc. The company also disclosed that Charles Phillips stepped down from the board effective last Friday and that board members Frank Martell and Steven Sordello will assume new leadership roles.

Hsiao brings more than 20 years of experience in consumer technology and digital advertising. During nearly two decades at Google, she led development of the Gemini app and oversaw the use of generative AI, natural language and speech technologies across Google’s consumer products, according to the company announcement. She previously served as vice president and general manager of Google’s display, video and app advertising businesses.

“Sissie joins our Board at a pivotal time where technology is reshaping how our real estate professionals work. Her AI and advertising background is exactly what we were looking for, and we welcome her to our Board,” Robert Reffkin, the CEO of Compass, said in the announcement.

Board-level tech expertise is important

For real estate brokerages and franchise operators, board-level technology expertise has become more important as firms race to deploy AI tools that can lower agent costs, automate back-office work and improve customer acquisition. Compass has positioned its HOME platform as an AI operating system for agents and consumers, putting pressure on rivals to keep pace on product development and capital allocation.

“Compass has built one of the most recognized collection of brands in real estate and a technology platform that genuinely helps real estate professionals grow their businesses. I’m glad to be joining the Board and looking forward to working with Robert and my fellow directors,” Hsiao said.

Compass said Phillips resigned from the board to devote more time to commitments outside the real estate industry and that his departure “was not due to any disagreement with the Company on any matter relating to the Company’s operations, policies or practices.” Phillips had served as a director since August 2020 and as lead independent director since February 2021. He also chaired the nominating and corporate governance committee and sat on the audit committee.

“Charles has been an extraordinary partner to this Board and to me personally. As our Lead Independent Director, he brought the judgment of an operator and the discipline of an investor to every conversation,” Reffkin said. “We thank him for his service and wish him continued success. Frank and Steve know our company well and their continued leadership and deep expertise will serve the Board and our shareholders well.”

Phillips said serving as lead independent director during Compass’s journey from pre-IPO to where it is today was an “honor.”

Frank Martell will succeed Phillips as lead independent director. Martell has served on the Compass board since November 2021 and currently chairs the audit committee and sits on the compensation committee. He brings more than 30 years of executive leadership experience in single- and multifamily real estate, data and analytics and scaled technology platforms, Compass said. Martell will continue to serve as president, CEO and a director of SmartRent Inc.

Steven Sordello will take over as chairperson of the nominating and corporate governance committee while remaining on the audit committee. Sordello, who joined the Compass board in November 2020, is described as a seasoned public company director experienced in corporate governance.

Board composition and governance structures have drawn more attention across the real estate and mortgage sectors as public market investors scrutinize how companies are overseeing AI investments, balancing capital returns and managing legal and regulatory risk. For brokers and franchisors, directors with technology and data backgrounds can help evaluate build-versus-buy decisions on software, data products and partnerships that directly affect agent productivity and margin.
