Compass sues former ERA president Alex Vidal over move to REMAX

October 22, 2026 · by Real Estate Presswire Pipeline

Compass International Holdings’ legal battles are no longer just confined to Zillow and the MLS space.

Last week, the real estate conglomerate filed a lawsuit against current REMAX President Alex Vidal in the Delaware Court of Chancery, claiming that his move to Real REMAX Group violated his noncompete agreement as president of Compass brand ERA Real Estate. The news was first reported by Inman.

In the suit, Compass and ERA claim that Vidal signed a Restrictive Covenant Agreement in 2022, 2024 and again in 2025, in which he agreed to “a one-year non-competition covenant,” “a two-year non-solicitation covenant” and “a perpetual non-disclosure and non-use covenant.” The complaint goes on to claim that via legal counsel, Vidal has refused to comply with these noncompete clauses.

According to Compass, in his role as president of ERA — in which he helped the company and his brand navigate Compass’s acquisition of Anywhere Real Estate and the integration of the two firms — Vidal “was privy to Plaintiffs’ most sensitive competitive Information.” This includes franchise agreements, integration strategies and ERA broker-owner relationship details.

Compass went on to claim that Vidal is not working for a firm with franchise model “virtually identical to ERA’s.”

Compass and ERA are asking the court to enforce the terms of Vidal’s noncompete agreements. Additionally, the plaintiffs are asking for preliminary and permanent injunctions blocking Vidal “from serving as President of, or otherwise providing services to, REMAX or any other Competing Business in violation of the Non-Competition Covenant for a one year period.”

Neither REMAX nor the Real REMAX Group immediately returned HousingWire’s request for comment.

A second try

This lawsuit represents the second time Compass and ERA have sought to enforce these noncompete agreements. The firms filed a similar suit against Vidal in Texas last month, but the court dismissed the case and deemed Delaware the “appropriate venue” for the litigation.

The complaint claims that in prior communications between Compass’s and Vidal’s legal teams about the agreements, Vidal’s counsel told Compass that the “Non-Competition Covenant is unenforceable and that he does not possess any of the Plaintiffs’ Confidential Information.”

Vidal joined REMAX in early September, replacing Chris Lim, who was appointed REMAX president in February 2026. His move to the newly formed Real REMAX Group came after serving as ERA president for a little over three years.

Earlier this month, Vidal told HousingWire that becoming REMAX president was “an opportunity of a lifetime.”

“As a leader, I knew that if I didn’t take this chance, I’d look back and regret it,” he said.
