Seventeen Years Building Someone Else’s Brand—Agent Discovers Independence

November 1, 2026 · by marcbennett

Seventeen years. That’s how long Jeff Glover spent inside the Keller Williams machine before deciding, in 2025, that independence might be worth a shot. He’s taken the Glover Agency solo, and the official line — delivered to Inman — is that the split keeps “Glover U” broker-agnostic. Translation: his training platform can now happily teach agents from every shop, not just the one writing his checks.

Let’s be honest about what’s actually happening here. The brokerage model that dominated the last two decades — high splits, high fees, corporate overhead dressed up as “culture” — is under strain. Commissions are under legal siege, agent counts are thinning, and the top producers have done the math: why surrender a third of your income for a logo and a Tuesday meeting about Tuesday meetings?

Glover isn’t the first to figure this out, and he won’t be the last. The independents and boutique shops have been quietly poaching talent for years while the big franchises kept insisting scale was a moat. Sometimes it is. Often it’s just a very expensive excuse.

The broker-agnostic angle is the genuinely clever part. Glover U as a standalone education brand isn’t tethered to any single brokerage’s fortunes — it sells to everyone, which in a shrinking market is the only growth strategy left standing. Whether that’s bold entrepreneurship or a shrewd exit from a decelerating franchise model depends entirely on your tolerance for optimism.

History suggests the agents who thrive through downturns are the ones who own their brand, their database, and their economics. Glover just moved all three in-house. The rest of the industry should probably take notes.
